CRRC Zhuzhou Institute was named as finalist of the The smarter E AWARD 2026 in the category "Energy Storage" for the application "High-Voltage Cascaded Energy Storage System".
CRRC’s high-voltage cascaded energy storage system is a utility-scale battery system that uses a cascaded H-bridge topology to generate medium-voltage AC power (10 to 35 kV) directly from the battery container, eliminating the need for an external PCS system and medium-voltage transformer. The system offers a round-trip efficiency above 91 %, grid forming capability and quick replacement of modules at costs comparable to other utility-scale containers while eliminating the additional costs for medium-voltage transformers. The technology has been demonstrated in a 120 MW/240 MWh project connected to the grid in 2025 with the Chinese steel industry.
