Fraunhofer IVI was named as finalist of the The smarter E AWARD 2026 in the category "E-Mobility" for the application "Underbody Charging System".
Fraunhofer IVI introduces the Underbody Charging System, an innovative charging solution for depot, logistics, and municipal vehicles. This conductive underbody charging system enables automated charging without cables and supports power levels of up to 4.5 MW. A standardized charging contact interface on the vehicle is required. Integrating the system into the roadway saves space and reduces infrastructure requirements. Compared to inductive systems, the solution offers higher efficiency due to lower energy losses and does not require active cooling. The system addresses key requirements of modern fleets, including automation, robustness, space efficiency, and enabling future autonomous operations.
