At the Alsterdorf bus depot in Hamburg, Germany, a stationary battery storage system with a capacity of 4 MW / 4.6 MWh has been installed, switching seasonally between two operating modes. From September to February, it operates behind the meter for peak shaving and internal load optimization. From March to August, it is marketed in front of the meter on the day-ahead and intraday markets using an AI-based energy trading autopilot. For the first time, temporary accounting decoupling enables the same storage system to operate as an independent market asset (“front of the meter”), even though it physically remains within the depot. In this way, the project combines grid support and economic efficiency while increasing flexibility in the renewable energy system. The innovation lies in the intelligent combination of AI-based trading, metering logic, and market integration.
