SMA Altenso was named as winner of the The smarter E AWARD 2026 in the category "Outstanding Projects" for the project "Africa's First Fully Integrated Green Hydrogen Plant".
In Namibia, SMA Altenso has helped realize Africa’s first solar-powered green hydrogen plant. This off-grid facility combines 6.5-hectares of solar PV, a 5.9 megawatt-hour BESS, and a 5-megawatt electrolyzer. It uses advanced energy management and multi-day forecasting to optimize battery storage and hydrogen production. SMA’s innovations included PV and BESS power stations, a containerized rectifier system for electrolysis, and a custom-built EMS. All green hydrogen is used locally to power dual-fuel trucks, busses, gensets, and, in the near future, a hydrogen-powered locomotive. Our jury hailed this project as a shining example of a sustainable energy ecosystem.
