Hydrostor was founded in Canada in 2010. Its A-Compressed Air Energy Storage System is an emission-free solution for utilities and governments. Its unique design uses purpose-built underground rock caverns filled with compressed air and water. It can be built in areas of high grid demand and provides between 8 and 24 hours of storage. Hydrostor claims its system requires up to 10-times less land and 20-times less water than pumped hydro stations. It achieves high storage density via hydrostatic compensation, which uses a water column to regulate air pressure. This is a key technological difference from other CAES technologies and significantly reduces the size of the underground cavern required. Its thermal management technology also captures and reuses waste heat from air compression, eliminating fossil fuels. Hydrostor’s system can operate for 50 years with zero performance degradation, delivering safe and reliable energy storage.
