No Thermal Propagation Technology by SAMSUNG

South Korea’s Samsung SDI was a unanimous choice for its “No Thermal Propagation” technology. This innovation significantly reduces the risk of thermal runaway and fires in EV battery modules. Using a hard case format, it features insulation between each battery cell to prevent thermal propagation from damaged or overheating cells. A pressure release valve above the battery cells allows hot gases to escape through vents in the battery cover, which is also insulated to contain further damage. If thermal runaway or propagation is detected, cell temperatures are also immediately reduced by a cooling plate underneath the battery packs. Our jury celebrated Samsung SDI’s entry as a strong technological advancement. By vastly improving the safety and reliability of EV traction batteries, it can contribute to the global acceptance of e-mobility.
